Effective Temperature Rating

There is a Rating formula from "Beyond Backpacking" by Ray Jardine that is helpful in determining how many layers of insulation you need.  ETR=100-(40xT)
ETR = Effective Temperature rating
T = the quilt or bag's thickness, in inches, covering the person.

When we multiply the thickness wanted by 40, then subtract the result from 100, we arrive at the ETR, the quilt or bag's Effective Temperature rating, in degrees Fahrenheit." Ray Jardine

For example: If you want a 20 degree bag it would require ~2 inches of loft
(4 layers of Climashield).  A 40 degree bag would require ~1 1/2 inches of
loft (3 layers of CL) or a 60 degree bag only require ~1 inch of loft or 2
layers of CL.  Climashield varies from 1/2 to 3/4" thick, this formula is
done using 1/2" as the base.  Keep in mind also the Combat syle Climashield
only weighs ~2.0oz per square yard.
