For all Water Proof Breathable fabrics that have lost that waterresistant breathable quality, McNett makes a product called, McNett Revivex Spray. It is for all types of WPB fabrics including Goretex, Soft shells, Ultrex and all Generic WPB fabrics. It is a long lasting, nontoxic, water based water repellency spray that is sprayed on after the fabric has been washed. It is then dried in the dryer so read the directions carefully.

Gore-Tex

W.L. Gore & Associates developed a laminate they apply to fabrics, which are then referred to as Gore-Tex. Other companies have developed coatings they apply which have the same effect, such as Dupont's Ultrex.

The basic concept for the Gore-Tex membrane is that the membrane has sufficient space between the interconnected membrane strands to allow easy passage of individual water molecules but not enough to permit water droplets to pass. Gore has strict guidelines for which fabrics they will laminate to the Gore-Tex membrane. Fabric weight, fiber quality, and durability are examples of criteria Gore uses when determining if a certain fabric will be used.

Many Gore-Tex fabrics are a two-ply fabric and should be lined to protect the breathable membrane. Three-ply fabrics already posses a liner and so save you the effort of putting one in.

CARE
Keep as free of dirt as possible. Brush off dirt or dust with either a dry or damp cloth as soon as possible. The soiled areas are not vapor permeable. Machine wash with wash-and-wear or low setting. Use warm water with low-phosphate detergent. Fabric softeners not recommended. Do not use bleach. For best performance, rinse twice using cold water to remove excess detergent. Tumble dry on low setting. Do not dry clean.

Ultrex

Ultrex(tm) fabrics are coated fabrics with a nylon face. Waterproof, windproof and breathable fabric similar to Gore-Tex®. nylon with a urethane micro porous coating to produce a lightweight shell fabric that is surpassingly soft and quiet. These micro pores are so small the rain and wind do not pass through, yet large enough to permit perspiration vapor molecules to escape and still retain much of the body's warmth. These are two-ply fabrics and should be lined to protect the breathable membrane. Lining protects the film from abrasion and reduces binding with undergarments.

Generic Waterresistant Breathable

Waterproof breathable fabrics have coatings or laminates with a special property: The barrier layer prevent water (and wind) from getting through them, but have small pores in them which allow water vapor to pass through

Whatever the process or fabric, all of them need to be lined to protect the waterproof, breathable barrier layer. Fabrics with just the barrier layer applied are called 2-ply fabrics. Some fabrics already have a protective layer applied and are known as 3-ply fabrics.
